However, for slaughtering purposes, designating the animal for training is usually enough as long as the cage is relatively close to a butchers. At some point the creature will need to be released into an animal training area for further training. However, the training in the cage will only progress to a certain level based on the fortress animal training level for that type of creature. When you trap a creature and designate it to be trained in the "Others" menu, you can designate a trainer and the trainer will find the cage if it's pathable and conduct the initial training wherever the cage is as long as a dorf isn't carrying it. It's kind of a hassle but dorfs gonna dorf. But if you have an animal that is not tame, you will have to build the cage in an animal training zone for it to be interacted with to increase the level from wild to tame. Generally people put animal stockpiles into animal training zones or pen/pasture zones, because they just have to open the cage to let the animal out. Once you get the stockpile up and running, they will drag an empty cage to the cage trap and drag back the cage to the animal stockpile w/o you needing to micromanage. So if you buy things you can work with it from the trade depot stockpile, but if you catch an animal you can't until they drag it to a stockpile. The Trade Depot is considered a catchall stockpile. The issue is, you can see some of the things even if it's not in a stockpile, but the game has an animal progression on how it wants animals to work. ![]() Either release into a pen, put into a training zone, or build the cage in a training room attached to a lever. so if you trap a yak or whatever, you have to wait for them to drag it to a stockpile before you can continue to work with it. They will drag the cage to the stockpile, you can't interact with it until they do. Make an animal stockpile and disallow empty cages/traps.
